How to Pick a Random Month

By My Wheel Name TeamPublished July 24, 20263 min read

A random month picker spins through January to December and lands on one. It's a smaller tool than the day picker and gets used for bigger things, because a month is the unit most long running plans are actually measured in.

What a month sized decision looks like

Plenty of decisions don't need a date, only a rough window. When to take leave, when to launch a side project, which month a club revisits, which month a review lands in. Fixing the month first turns an open ended intention into something with a boundary.

It also breaks a real bias. Left to ourselves, most people cluster plans into the same three or four months and quietly ignore the rest of the year. An even spin surfaces February and November far more often than any human would choose them.

Where people use it

  • Book clubs and film clubs choosing which month of the back catalogue to revisit.
  • Travel planning with no fixed season, where the month decides the whole shape of the trip.
  • Creative challenges that assign a theme to each month of the year.
  • Classroom research tasks, where each student writes about an event from the month they drew.
  • Personal projects that keep sliding, where naming a launch month is the only real commitment.

Trimming the year to the months that are real

All twelve months are equally likely by default. Almost every practical use wants fewer than twelve, so edit the list before the first spin.

Remove December if nothing ships that month. Remove August if half your team is away. Remove the months that clash with your climate for anything outdoors. What remains is a wheel where every result is genuinely workable.

Pairing months with days

Multi Wheel mode spins a month and a day together, which narrows a plan without pinning it to an exact date. That's often the right level of precision for something months away, where a specific date would be guesswork anyway.

Assigning twelve themes to a year

  1. Load the month wheel: Start from the twelve months and remove any that are already committed to something else.
  2. Build a second list: Put your themes, topics, or projects on a separate wheel so each one can be drawn against a month.
  3. Turn on Remove Winners: On both wheels, so every month gets exactly one theme and no theme is used twice.
  4. Spin through the year: Draw a pair at a time and record each result. Save both wheels so next year's planning starts from the same lists.

Trim the year to the months that would actually work, spin once, and you have a boundary where before there was only an intention.

Questions, answered

Can I remove months I would never choose?

Yes, and it's worth doing before the first spin. Edit the entries to drop any month that's already committed or impractical, so every possible result is one you'd genuinely accept.

How do I draw twelve different months without repeats?

Turn on Remove Winners. Each drawn month leaves the wheel, so twelve spins give you twelve different months. Without it, every spin is independent and repeats are normal.

Can I weight some months more heavily?

Yes. Raise a month's weight and it comes up proportionally more often, which suits cases where a month is preferred but not required, such as favouring spring for an outdoor event without ruling out summer.

Can I pick a month and a day together?

Yes. Multi Wheel mode spins two wheels at once, so you can pair months with days for a narrower window. The two picks are independent, so there's no hidden link between the month and the day you get.

Is each month equally likely?

Yes, unless you change it. Every month carries equal weight by default and each spin draws from your browser's cryptographic random source, so no month is quietly favoured over another.
